Charles Joguet, 2016 Chinon "Les Charmes"
Cab Franc du Jour #35
Charles Joguet farms approximately 40 hectares of Cabernet Franc across four communes in the Chinon appellation: Beaumont-en-Véron and Chinon on the right bank of the Vienne, and Sazilly and Anché on the left bank. The way the Vienne cuts through the landscape means that vineyards generally slope toward the river: on the right bank they face south, and on the left bank they face north. Those north-facing left bank sites tend to run cooler and are typically harvested later in the season.
In the Vineyard & In the Cellar
Today’s wine comes from the lieu-dit of Les Charmes in the commune of Anché, which sits directly across the Vienne from Cravant-les-Côteaux, about 3km back from the river. The vineyard spans 6 hectares in total, but this cuvée draws from a specific 1.5-hectare plot toward the top of the vineyard, on a limestone plateau that slopes gently to the north with a shallow clay topsoil. The vines are between 30 and 40 years of age.
The wine is vinified in larger 60hl wooden vats and aged in used neutral barrels for seven months before bottling.
